Hair, nails and the outermost layer of skin, are composed of varying amounts of the proteins keratin, collagen and elastin plus a range of vitamins and minerals. Keratin causes a thickening of tissues, while collagen has a high tensile strength. They are abundant in harder tissue such as hair and nail. Hair and nail also have more inorganic substances such as the minerals silica and calcium. Skin needs to stretch, therefore it contains more elastin.
